This role spans all phases of the project lifecycle, from requirements gathering to final design and project management, collaborating with customers, vendors, and internal teams to deliver custom automation solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design 3D models and engineering drawings for mechanical machines based on sketches, concepts, or customer mark-ups.
  • Prepare drawing packages and bills of material (BOMs) for custom automation machines.
  • Research product specifications, contact vendors, and obtain quotations.
  • Support engineering standards improvement and participate in hands-on shop work.
  • Present designs in customer review meetings.
  • Delegate tasks and review/check drawings before engineering release.
  • Work with controls engineers to develop Sequences of Operation.
  • Coordinate with machine assemblers and fabricators.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of machine design fundamentals.
  • Proven experience with Autodesk Inventor or similar 3D modeling software.
  • Knowledge of materials, machining costs, and budget-conscious design.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic AutoCAD.
  • Understanding of machine controls systems and able to read schematics.
  • Experience with pneumatic/hydraulic systems and motor sizing.
  • Familiarity with fluid dynamics and vacuum/blower system design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering with 6+ years of experience, or 10+ years of relevant machine design experience.
  • Training in Inventor or SolidWorks (AS in Machine Design Technology or equivalent experience).
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Field service or assembly experience; ability to troubleshoot and debug machinery.
  • Expertise in Autodesk Vault and Inventor.

This is a full-time role reporting to the Engineering Manager. Some travel may be required. To apply, submit your resume and portfolio to bigsky@bigskyeng.com with a brief cover letter highlighting your experience and interest in the role.

*Service Coordinator*

Big Sky Engineering designs and builds custom automation systems for clients across a range of industries. We are hiring a Service Coordinator to be the internal point of contact for parts and service requests after a machine ships. You will triage incoming service calls, scope and quote spare parts and on-site service work, and keep the queue moving so customers get clear answers and fast turnaround. This is a focused, individual-contributor role working closely with engineering, purchasing, and the field team.

What You’ll Own:

  • Service triage: be the first point of contact for incoming service calls and emails, gather the right information, and prioritize by urgency and impact.
  • Set clear expectations with customers on next steps, timing, and cost, and route work to the right internal team.
  • Spare parts quoting: identify the right part, confirm availability, and quote pricing and lead time, working with purchasing and engineering as needed.
  • On-site service quoting: scope and quote service visits including travel, labor, and parts, and convert approved quotes into scheduled work.
  • Coordinate parts availability, technician scheduling, and shop resources with purchasing and production.
  • Keep clean records of service activity and hand work to finance for accurate, on-time billing.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 3+ years in a service coordination, parts, field service, or technical support role, ideally in custom automation, industrial equipment, or related manufacturing.
  • Technical fluency: comfortable reading mechanical and electrical drawings and diagnosing issues over the phone.
  • Quoting ability for labor, travel, and materials.
  • Strong customer presence with excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Organized, able to juggle a triage queue and an open-quote list without anything falling through the cracks.

Nice to Have:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, Business, or a related field. Equivalent hands-on experience is fully acceptable.
  • Experience with ERP systems and service management software.
  • Background with PLCs, motion control, pneumatics, or robotics.

This is an on-site role in Verona, WI, reporting to the Operations Manager. To apply, send a resume and a short note about a service or quoting situation you handled that you’re proud of to garys@bigskyeng.com.

*Machinist 2*

Big Sky Engineering builds custom automation equipment for manufacturers who can’t buy what they need off the shelf, and our machine shop makes the precision parts that go into those builds. This isn’t a job shop running the same part for months. Every machine is different, so the work is too, and the parts you cut end up in real equipment that ships and runs.
We’re growing our machining department and looking for an experienced machinist who can both program and run our machines. You’ll work directly alongside our Lead Machinist producing precision components for custom machine builds. Parts are one-offs or small batches, pulled from engineering prints and held to tight tolerances: high-mix, low-volume work, rarely the same job twice, and you’ll see a job through from setup to first article. You’ll learn to run and program every machine in the shop, from our conversational-controlled bed mill and knee mills to the Mazak VCEZ-26, the brand-new Haas VM-9, and the Haas SL-20 turning center, with real room to grow into more complex work and Fusion 360 CAM.
Shift: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm

Essential Job Functions:

  • Program and run CNC and manual machine tools using Acu-Rite and Mazatrol conversational controls, CAM, or G-code depending on the job.
  • Operate a range of equipment: Clausing CNC bed mill and knee mill (Acu-Rite controls), Mazak VCEZ-26, Haas VM-9 large-format VMC, Haas SL-20, manual lathes, drill press, arbor press, bench grinder, surface grinders, tapping arms, band saws, and a Mitutoyo CMM.
  • Cut and prep material across aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened tool steels, and engineering plastics like Delrin and UHMW.
  • Set up jobs independently: fixturing, tooling, offsets, and first-article inspection.
  • Read engineering drawings and GD&T callouts.
  • Maintain quality by inspecting your own work.
  • Deburr and finish components.
  • Perform daily machine maintenance: coolant, lubrication, chip cleanout, and keeping your machine and work area clean.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • 5+ years operating machine tools (manual, CNC, or both). We will consider candidates from a machine tool technology program or manufacturing/mechanical engineering background in place of the experience requirement; the right foundation matters more than years on a resume.
  • 2+ years programming experience with CAM software, conversational control, or G-code.
  • Confident reading engineering drawings: tolerances, GD&T, and multi-view prints.
  • Able to run a job completely independently, from material prep through final inspection.
  • Efficiency mindset: you think about what comes next, not just what’s in front of you.
  • Comfortable running multiple machines simultaneously without losing quality or focus.
  • Strong attention to detail and ownership of your own work.

A Plus (Not Required):

  • CNC lathe / turning center experience (Haas or similar).
  • Fusion 360 CAM or other CAM software.
  • Mazak or similar VMC experience.
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Inventor or AutoCAD.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Able to lift raw materials, final products, and items packed for shipment manually up to 50 lbs.

What We Offer:

  • Yearly profit sharing.
  • 401(k) with company matching.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off and parental leave.
  • Clean, climate-controlled work environment.
  • A small team where your work is visible and your contribution matters, in a fast-growing department.

This is a full-time, in-person role in Verona, WI. To apply, submit your resume to bigsky@bigskyeng.com.
