*Mechanical Design Engineer | Machine Designer*

Job Summary

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role involves designing mechanical systems and creating detailed documentation using Autodesk Inventor. You will be involved in all phases of the project lifecycle—from requirements gathering to final design and project management. You’ll collaborate with customers, vendors, and internal teams to deliver custom automation solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design 3D models and engineering drawings for mechanical machines based on sketches, concepts, or customer mark-ups.
  • Prepare drawing packages and bills of material (BOMs) for custom automation machines.
  • Research product specifications, contact vendors, and obtain quotations.
  • Support engineering standards improvement and participate in hands-on shop work.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure timely and high-quality deliverables.
  • Present designs in customer review meetings.
  • Delegate tasks and review/check drawings before engineering release.
  • Work with controls engineers to develop Sequences of Operation.
  • Coordinate with machine assemblers and fabricators.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of machine design fundamentals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven experience with Autodesk Inventor or similar 3D modeling software.
  • Knowledge of materials, machining costs, and budget-conscious design.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic AutoCAD.
  • Understanding of basic machine controls.
  • Experience with pneumatic/hydraulic systems and motor sizing.
  • Familiarity with fluid dynamics and vacuum/blower system design.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering with 4+ years of experience or 8+ years of relevant machine design experience.
  • AS in Machine Design Technology or similar discipline with training in Inventor or SolidWorks with 8+ years of relevant machine design experience.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Field service or assembly experience; ability to troubleshoot and debug machinery.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Support installation of equipment and equipment startup at customer’s sites.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems
  • Troubleshoot mechanical systems.
  • Troubleshoot PLC’s, robots, HMIs, and vision system software.
  • Redline electrical and mechanical documentation.
  • Backup and manage machine software.
  • Execute testing and run off parameters to verify machine operating as designed.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, vendors, and employees.
  • Up to 75% travel required.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Proven strong aptitude with computers and learning new systems
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC and HMI programming
  • Proven experience working effectively in a team environment
  • Required excellent oral and written communication skills in order to communicate effectively with customers, vendors, and coworkers
  • Working knowledge of all MS Office applications
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, blueprints, etc.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems
  • Ability to perform basic mechanical adjustments.
  • Other duties as requested by Operations / Service Manager.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal customers.

  • Ability to inspect materials, products, and/or equipment to detect defects or malfunctions.
